First three months of going back after an exchange : Indonesian edition

23.26

As a person that has just been back after an exchange year, I have found myself dwelling in this quote:

"Going on an exchange is one thing, but going back home is another."

And throughout the recent 4 months of my being-home experience (yes, what I mean by home here is my natural home), I have summed up my experience in several (hopefully) relatable gifs!

Upon your arrival...

1. You get excited to be home, but also sad at the same time.

2. Then you get to reunite with your friends and family...

3. But wait- the worst is yet to come; "Mana oleh-olehnya?"

DO YOU GUYS EVEN KNOW HOW MANY THINGS I HAD TO BRING BACK HOME AND HOW EXPENSIVE THOSE SOUVENIRS ARE

4. Your first day of school here was probably SCARIER than your first day of school in your exchange country.

You know, befriending your new classmates, trying to remember lessons you already forget... as well as probably hating the fact that you're still in high school.

5. Don't forget those "hey-you-used-to-be-my-senior-but-now-it's-weird-that-we're-in-this-together" look from your new friends...

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, PLEASE STOP CALLING ME "KAK".

6. Some of your already-graduated friends might visit you in your high school and make you feel so much better by seeing them around the school.

7. You always get confused whenever asked, "Gimana pengalamannya kemarin?"

Really, though, the question should be :
"HOW DO I SUMMARIZE A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE INTO A MINI-SPEECH TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?"

8. You tend to answer with, "Seru/enak/menantang/asik banget kok." or the classic "Ya gitu deh."

9. But when a person asks you about a specific experience, you go all out to tell him/her every single details of it.

 MUST. NOT. FORGET. DETAILS.

10. During some nights, I think we all know the feeling of accidentally seeing updates from your friends and host family in your exchange country, which makes you feel homesick and unmotivated at the same time.

11. And this situation happens too often and sudden.

Like ugh, can you guys please not share your gorgeous homecoming pictures when I'm with my math book studying algebra?!

12. You know the drill. You become so unmotivated to continue whatever you're doing and start doing a trip down the memory lane.

"I MISS EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING AAAAAAHHHH!!!"

13. But you also get excited when a friend or host family member reaches you out.

14. Also let's not forget the excitement you get when hearing a person or seeing one speaking in your exchange country's language.

15. But when you hear people talking sh*t about your host country that's really, really stereotypical and generalized...

"Oh yeah? I didn't know that!"

16. But oh well, time after time, with the support of your family, friends, fellow returnees, and people you've met along the way...

17. It all gets better someway somehow.

18. And without knowing it, you're already back to your old rhythm!

19. At the end of the day, you're grateful for the things you've experienced and how they've made you a better person now.

Now go. Make new memories with your new friends and family. Time flies really fast, and just in a blink of an eye, we're going to be out there surviving college.

Yes we still got one more year, but we had already survived the best and worst year of our life.

So, what to worry?

xoxo,
